Breast Lift
Conveniently located to serve the areas of Beverly Hills, CA
A breast lift, or mastopexy, is an aesthetic procedure that reduces excess skin and raises the breasts for a more elevated, youthful appearance. With age or weight fluctuations, the breasts have a tendency to droop and lose elasticity. By removing redundant skin and repositioning important structures, a breast lift restores a firmer contour.
At Ghavami Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills, Dr. Ashkan Ghavami is renowned aesthetic specialist dedicated to achieving beautifully natural-looking outcomes. As masters of advanced facial and body contouring techniques, they provide personalized care to help every patient reach their desired aesthetic goals.

About Breast Lift
A breast lift addresses ptosis, or sagging, which naturally occurs over time due to various factors. (1) Gravity exerts a downward force, while the natural aging process leads to a loss of skin elasticity and glandular tissue volume. Significant weight fluctuations and pregnancy can also stretch the skin and ligaments, leaving the breasts appearing deflated or heavy at the bottom. A breast lift also allows for repositioning of the nipple-areolar complex to a more central, frontward-facing height on the breast mound, (2) often reducing the size of enlarged or stretched areolas for a more balanced and proportionate look.
Breast Lift Techniques
Based on your unique anatomy, the amount of excess skin, and the necessary degree of lift, Dr. Ghavami will select an advanced surgical technique to achieve optimal aesthetic results. Available techniques include:
- Periareolar (Donut/Circular) Lift: This technique is most common for patients with minimal to moderate sagging.
- Vertical (Lollipop) Lift: This common technique addresses moderate sagging with two incisions: one around the areola and a vertical incision extending down the bottom half of the breast to the inframammary fold.
- Anchor (Inverted T) Lift: This method is best for patients requiring more significant reshaping or restructuring. It uses three incisions: around the areola, vertically down to the crease, and horizontally along the inframammary fold.
In certain cases, such as for patients who have experienced significant weight loss, Dr. Ghavami may employ an “internal bra” technique. This approach uses deep sutures to reinforce the breast’s internal structure and ensure long-term support and stability.
Benefits
A breast lift offers numerous improvements, many of which surpass simple aesthetic enhancements.
Notable benefits include:
- An Elevated, More Youthful Appearance: A mastopexy counters the effects of gravity and aging, resulting in breasts that are higher on the chest wall and have a firmer, more youthful contour and projection.
- Restored Confidence and Improved Self-Esteem: By addressing dissatisfaction or self-consciousness from sagging breasts, the procedure can significantly boost a patient’s self-image, leading to renewed confidence.
- Improved Clothing Fit: The elevation and reshaping often resolve issues with clothing that previously didn’t fit correctly, allowing patients to feel more comfortable wearing a broader selection of necklines and styles. It can also be easier to shop for bras.
- Enhanced Symmetry and Nipple Position: A breast lift can create a more balanced and harmonious silhouette by correcting asymmetry and repositioning the nipple-areolar complex to a more central, elevated, and upward-facing position.
- Relief from Physical Discomfort: The elevation and repositioning of breast tissue can alleviate physical discomfort such as irritation or chafing at the inframammary fold.
Candidates
Women who seek breast lifts typically want to address sagging tissue without increasing volume. This procedure is an excellent option for individuals who have experienced significant volume loss or breast deflation after weight loss or breastfeeding.
Eligible candidates will meet most, if not all, of the following criteria:
- In Good Overall Health: Patients must be medically cleared for surgery, in good physical health, and be non-smokers or willing to quit nicotine use for an extended period of time before and after surgery.
- At a Stable Weight: Major weight fluctuations can negatively impact the results of a mastopexy, so being at or near a maintainable weight is essential.
- Have Realistic Expectations: Candidates should have a clear understanding of what surgery can and cannot accomplish.
- Have Completed Childbearing (Recommended): Changes in breast shape and size during pregnancy and breastfeeding can compromise long-term results.
Personal Consultation
During this in-person meeting, Dr. Ghavami will review your medical history, discuss your goals, and conduct a physical evaluation. They will check for skin quality, degree of ptosis, volume displacement, underlying structure, nipple position, and symmetry. With this information at hand, your surgeon will create a customized surgical plan. If you are considering combining the lift with breast augmentation, you will also review implant types, sizes, and placement options.

Preparation
Your surgeon will provide you with detailed instructions to follow in the weeks leading up to your breast lift in order to ensure a seamless procedure and recovery. Some general guidelines include:
- Stop any nicotine use and abstain during the recovery period.
- Avoid alcohol in the days surrounding your surgery.
- Temporarily suspend use of any blood-thinning medications or supplements.
- Schedule time off from work and other commitments to recover.
- Arrange personal transportation and assistance for the day of your surgery and 24-48 hours of early recovery.
- Prepare a comfortable recovery space.
- As necessary, fill all prescriptions and complete any pre-op lab work.
Procedure
You will receive the appropriate anesthesia to remain comfortable throughout the breast lift procedure, which typically lasts two to three hours. Your surgeon starts by marking a precise incision map around the breast contours and areolar borders to guide their surgical adjustments. Using advanced incision and suturing techniques, they will effectively lift, reposition, and redistribute breast volume to achieve the desired appearance with strong internal support. They reposition the nipple-areolar complex to an elevated, central, and symmetrical location. Finally, your surgeon will close all incisions with smooth, meticulous sutures that minimize skin tension and visible scarring.
Recovery
It is common to experience some swelling, bruising, tightness, or soreness, but prescribed medications can help manage discomfort, and these symptoms typically resolve naturally. You will wear a supportive compression garment or surgical bra during the initial healing phase to minimize swelling and support new breast contours. Your surgeon encourages you to take light walks as early as a couple of days after your procedure to promote circulation. Patients typically return to regular, non-strenuous activity within a couple of weeks, but you must avoid heavy lifting and more strenuous activity until receiving clearance. Attend all follow-up appointments so Dr. Ghavami can monitor your healing progress and answer any questions that may come up.
Results
You will notice a marked improvement in the projection and height of your breasts and nipple position, even before swelling and bruising completely subside. As your breasts settle into their fully healed position over the next two to three months, you will notice a better shape and a youthful lift. Patients enjoy a more pleasing volume distribution, reduced skin laxity, and a more proportional and youthful overall shape. The aesthetically transformative results lead to increased self-esteem and confidence in and out of clothing. The structural improvements from the breast lift are generally permanent.
Corresponding Procedures
Depending on your aesthetic goals and unique body structure, you may combine your breast lift with other procedures to achieve a more comprehensive aesthetic transformation. Dr. Ghavami can help you explore potential combination procedures during your personal consultation.
- Breast Augmentation: While a breast lift does not add volume, many patients pair it with breast augmentation to restore or increase volume using implants or fat transfer. This integrated approach is ideal for addressing both deflation and drooping.
- Liposuction: Liposuction can pair with a breast lift for contour refinement, removing excess fat to sculpt areas like the abdomen, flanks, or bra-line regions, contributing to a sleeker silhouette or a more hourglass-like figure.
- Tummy Tuck: This procedure addresses excess skin, soft tissue, and fat on the abdomen, often including repair of widely spaced abdominal muscles and belly button rejuvenation. Surgeons frequently combine a tummy tuck with a breast lift as part of a customizable mommy makeover treatment plan.

FAQ
Will a breast lift make my breasts smaller?
A breast lift removes excess skin and tissue but does not significantly change the overall size of the breasts. Some patients, however, perceive their breasts as slightly smaller due to the improved firmness, shape, and elevated position.
How long do the results of a breast lift last?
The results of a breast lift can last many years, especially when patients maintain a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle. While the structural improvements are generally permanent, natural aging, gravity, and future weight fluctuations can still influence the breasts.
Are breast lift scars noticeable?
Our surgeons place incisions very strategically to minimize visible scarring. With proper care, scars typically fade significantly over time. Scars may be around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, or along the inframammary fold, depending on the technique used.
