About Liposuction

Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that can remove stubborn, diet-resistant fat from the body. (1) This procedure utilizes a thin, suctioning tube called a cannula to break down and suction out your fat, and it can address concerns on nearly all parts of the body, such as the:

  • Abdomen
  • Waist
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs
  • Knees
  • Upper Arms
  • Chin
  • Cheeks
  • Neck

With liposuction, you can finally address your stubborn bulges and attain the figure you have been striving for.

Benefits

Liposuction is known to offer numerous significant benefits. Many of the benefits our patients tend to experience include:

  • Adaptable Treatment: Your surgeon can perform liposuction to remove fat from across the face, breasts, and body. This procedure can also complement others for more transformative results.
  • Long-Lasting Results: The results of liposuction can last for several years, especially when maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle.
  • Improved Proportions: Your surgeon can perform liposuction to improve harmony and balance across the body’s contours.
  • Individualized Treatment Plan: Dr. Ghavami and Dr. Vranis fully tailor each treatment plan around your specific concerns, goals, and anatomy, ensuring personalized results that align with your ideal aesthetic.

Candidates

Liposuction candidates include those seeking to eliminate stubborn fat that does not seem to be responding to traditional means, like dieting or exercise. Patients should also have good skin elasticity, as this will ensure their skin retracts to their new figure after fat removal.

Anyone interested in liposuction should be in good general health and maintain realistic expectations regarding their results. Patients should be nonsmokers or willing to quit. It is also important that anyone who has recently lost weight achieve a stable and maintainable weight beforehand, as fluctuations can affect their results. During the consultation, your surgeon will assess your medical history and areas of concern to determine your candidacy for this procedure.

Personal Consultation

Before undergoing your procedure, you will need to attend a personal consultation with your surgeon. During this consultation, they will discuss the procedure, your medical history, aesthetic concerns, and desired outcomes. They will also perform a physical evaluation to examine your targeted treatment areas. They will then use this information to confirm your candidacy and help you create an effective treatment plan.

Preparation

Your surgeon will provide you with a detailed set of pre-operative instructions. They may instruct you to:

  • Refrain from taking any medications or supplements that contain blood-thinning properties.
  • Prepare to take time away from your responsibilities to rest.
  • Arrange transportation to and from your procedure.
  • Fill any prescriptions ahead of time.
  • Avoid alcohol before and after your appointment.
  • Cease any nicotine or tobacco use for several weeks leading up to your procedure.

Preparation is an essential part of any procedure or treatment. By following each of these guidelines, you can ensure the best possible results.

Procedure

Your surgeon will place several small incisions around the targeted treatment areas before administering a tumescent solution into the fat deposits. The tumescent solution consists of lidocaine, epinephrine, and saline, and it will further numb your tissues, reduce bleeding, and swell the fat cells, making them easier to remove.

Your surgeon will insert a thin cannula into the treatment area and move it back and forth to emulsify your fat before suctioning it out of the body. As your surgeon does this, they will carefully recontour your body to enhance the definition and sculpt of your natural figure. They will then close each incision after sculpting your desired appearance.

Recovery

After your procedure, you can expect to experience some swelling, bruising, or tenderness around the treated areas. These effects are transient and will subside on their own within several weeks, but you may also manage them using pain medications and plenty of rest. Your surgeon will provide you with a compression garment to wear throughout your recovery. You must wear this garment as instructed, as it minimizes swelling and will preserve the shape of your new contours as you heal.

You may return to light activities after approximately 1–2 weeks, but you will need to continue avoiding strenuous or physically demanding activities until you receive clearance. Your surgeon may also ask you to attend follow-up appointments to ensure your results are developing as expected.

Your surgeon will give you a set of detailed post-operative instructions during your consultation. These directions will help you care for your incisions, manage any initial side effects, and reintroduce more demanding activities into your routine.

Liposuction Results

You will be able to notice improvements immediately after your procedure, but the full, refined results of liposuction will become more apparent as residual swelling subsides.

The results of your liposuction procedure can last for several years, with many patients achieving permanent results. However, weight fluctuations can alter your results, making it essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Corresponding Procedures

Tummy Tuck

Several procedures can be paired with liposuction to complement your results, one of which is our tummy tuck procedure. A tummy tuck is a body contouring procedure that can tighten your abdominal muscles and remove loose, hanging skin around the midsection. Patients frequently undergo this procedure to address the physical changes associated with rapid weight loss or pregnancy. This procedure is often performed alongside liposuction. Liposuction can remove excess fat from the abdomen before the skin removal process.

S-Curve Buttock Lift®

The S-Curve Buttock Lift® is a procedure pioneered by Dr. Ghavami to reinvent the traditional BBL. It builds upon liposuction to create a more sculpted, curvy silhouette. His technique removes excess fat from areas like the abdomen, flanks, and hips and strategically transfers it to the buttocks and surrounding regions. By focusing on the entire body rather than a single area, the S-Curve Buttock Lift® enhances proportions and creates elegantly defined contours.

FAQ

Can liposuction help me lose weight?

No. Liposuction is a body-contouring procedure, not a weight loss procedure. Anyone interested in liposuction should already be at a stable, maintainable weight, as significant fluctuations can affect the appearance of your results.

What areas of the body can liposuction address?

Your surgeon can perform liposuction to address accumulated fat around the abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, buttocks, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks, and neck. Essentially, in any area with excess fat, liposuction can be used for contouring.

How long will the results of my liposuction procedure last?

Liposuction creates long-lasting results, especially when patients maintain a nutritious diet and exercise regularly. Fat removal is technically permanent, as once fat cells are removed, they cannot regenerate.

How much fat will be removed during my procedure?

The amount of fat removed will vary depending on the size of the treatment area, your natural anatomy, and your desired results. Your surgeon will discuss each of these details with you during your consultation after getting to know your goals. In any case, liposuction removes a relatively small amount of fat—just enough to improve contours and create stunningly natural results.

Can my liposuction procedure be combined with another aesthetic procedure or treatment?

Yes, you may choose to combine your liposuction treatment with another to complement your results and further elevate your figure. For further information and personalized recommendations, we encourage you to schedule a consultation. The procedure is often performed alongside a tummy tuck for patients who want to achieve a flat, smooth abdomen.
